8. Beverly Johnson.

While we wait for the history books to catch up… #transhistorytuesday Before Tyra, Naomi, and even Iman. In 1971 Tracy Africa Norman was discovered by legendary photographer Irving Penn in New York City. The same year Beverly Johnson took up modeling. Tracy landed contracts with Clairol, Avon, and Ultra Sheen. She appeared on hair color boxes, in Essence magazine, and Italian Vogue. Unlike Beverly, Tracy had a secret that was not socially acceptable at the time, she was transgender. Shortly after Tracy’s career began to bloom an assistant to the hairstylist on an Essence shoot spilled her tea as we say, (disclosed her as trans) to the editor and her opportunities in the states were cut short. Tracy took her modeling career to Europe walking runway through the 70s and 80s. She returned to the states in the 90s and founded the underground ballroom house of Africa. As a ballroom girl myself I can say Tracy was a huge inspiration to me. Her story resonates with me deeply on many levels. She makes me proud not only to be a trans woman determined to succeed, but a product of the house and ballroom community. I can’t help but wonder what would have come of her career in the states had she not faced such prejudice and transphobia. We must celebrate her. She paved the way for so many. #transhistorytuesday #TracyAfricaNorman #TracyAfrica #TracyGayleNorman #Iman #tyrabanks #naomicampbell #beverlyjohnson #irvingpenn #essencemag #parisisburning
